If the neck cannot be straightened via the trussrod and you have resorted to fitting a spacer to extend the trussrods pull, (which really shouldnt be done).

Then you need a new neck, or, you wind the truss rod off completley, remove frets, re-level the board with the truss rod just engaged and refret, this takes you back to a straight neck with truss rod just engaged

The goal, should be a perfectly straight neck without strings engaged,

All, I thought I'd update, I'm still working this neck. I have persevered with heating and clamping the neck. Up until Sunday it was having very little effect. However I gave it some good heat and left it clamped for 3 full days, and now it seems the warp displacement has halved. I plan to leave it for about 10 days now and check it hasn't moved back, at which point I hope I can remount it and check the action with strings on. Fingers crossed, if it doesn't return to previous shape then it'll be fine for a setup. Not quite as new but workable, which is good enough
